Blue Caps Close Out Regular Season-7/26/08
The Blue Caps concluded their regular season schedule today with their final interleague match-up against the Columbia Reds. A depleted Blue Caps team fought hard but came up short in both games, falling 10-0 and 7-0.
The Blue Caps now await the final seeding and format for the Jacob's Cup Tournament, which begins on Monday, July 28. The first round games are scheduled to take place at 4 pm and 7:15 pm at Paul VI High School.
Hays Threatening to Take Triple Crown-7/21/08
Robert Hays, of St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas, is currently leading the Clark Griffith League in all three of the triple crown categories (through July 21). He is hitting .439 at this point in the summer, leading the next closest player by a wide margin. His two home runs in this evening's game put his total up to 11 on the season, two ahead of teammate Max Eckert (Stevenson) and a handful of other players. His RBI total of 39 also leads the league by a handful.
The Blue Caps have the least number of games remaining on the schedule with four, so it will be interesting to track Hays' performance in this final week of what has been a stellar summer for him to see if he can pull of the feat.
Blue Caps Bring the Lumber-7/21/08
The Blue Caps brought the offense this evening as they defeated the Arlington Diamonds, 12-4. Jay Joines (Richmond) picked up his fourth win of the summer in going five innings and allowing one run. Robert Hays (St. Edward's) had two home runs and six RBIs in pacing the Blue Caps' offense. Mike Lenox (Bridgewater) also chipped in a couple of hits and RBIs in the game.
The Blue Caps return to action with their final matchup with the Fairfax Nationals on Wednesday, July 23, at Paul VI High School. The game is scheduled to start at 7 pm.
Blue Caps Earn Split-7/19/08
The Blue Caps split this evening's doubleheader with the Southern Maryland Cardinals, dropping the first game 10-8 and winning the second game 6-5. Max Langford (Dartmouth) went the distance in earning the win in the second game. Max Eckert (Stevenson) had four hits on the day, Shane Brown (Central Florida) chipped in three of his own, and Robert Hays (St. Edward's) also had four hits to power the Blue Caps' offense.
The Blue Caps play their final home game of the summer Monday afternoon, July 21, as part of a split doubleheader at Fairfax High School. The Blue Caps will play the Arlington Diamonds at 4 pm with the Vienna Senators playing the McLean Raiders shortly after.
Blue Caps Come Up Short-7/18/08
The Blue Caps lost this evening's game to the DC Grays, 5-4. A few costly errors early in the game put the Blue Caps in a 4-0 hole that they could not quite climb out of. Taylor Land (St. Edward's) went the distance in the losing effort, throwing well and battling around the defensive miscues. Derek Kline (Millersville) paced the offense with a 2-4 day.
The Blue Caps return to Fairfax High School Saturday night for a doubleheader against the Southern Maryland Cardinals. The first game is scheduled to begin at 5 pm.
Blue Caps Drop Tight One-7/14/08
The Blue Caps lost tonite to the Fairfax Nationals, 5-4. The Blue Caps took a 4-3 lead into the top of the ninth when A.J. Kirby-Jones hit a two-run homer to put the Nationals on top for good. Robert Hays (St. Edward's) hit his ninth home run of the summer and Mike Lenox (Bridgewater) had two hits and two RBIs in the losing effort. Max Langford (Dartmouth) threw six strong innings to put the Blue Caps in position to win.
The Blue Caps' next game will be Wednesday, June 16, at Water's Field against the Vienna Senators. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 pm.
Blue Caps Fall to Raiders-7/11/08
The Blue Caps fell to the McLean Raiders this evening, 8-2. The Blue Caps had plenty of chances, but failed to capitalize as they left eleven men on base. A few key misplays in the field also hurt the Blue Caps this evening. Chris Duffy (Central Florida) continued to heat up as he had two doubles, powering an attack that was held down for the most part by Raiders starter Shane Pysh.
The Blue Caps travel to Baltimore Saturday for their interleague doubleheader. The games are scheduled to begin at 3:30 at Dundalk Community College.
Blue Caps Bust Out-7/10/08
This evening the Blue Caps' bats woke up from their recent slumber as they took down the DC Grays, 13-6. Robert Hays (St. Edward's) was 4-4 and was a triple short of the cycle. Max Eckert (Stevenson) also hit his league-leading ninth home run and Mike Lenox (Bridgewater), Shane Brown (Central Florida), and Chris Duffy (Central Florida) also chipped in multi-hit games to fuel the Blue Caps' attack. Alex Eliopoulos (John's Hopkins) tossed six innings, allowing just one run, in picking up his second win of the season.
The Blue Caps travel to McLean High School on Friday night, July 11, to play the McLean Raiders. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
Blue Caps Drop Both-7/9/08
The Blue Caps dropped both of their games this evening. The first game was the continuation of June 19's suspended game, which the Blue Caps ended up losing, 9-5. In the scheduled game, the Blue Caps were held hitless until the eighth inning before trying to mount a late charge and falling, 7-2. Jay Joines (Richmond) threw very well until the seventh inning, giving the Blue Caps a chance despite the no-hit bid.
The Blue Caps are home at Fairfax High School again on Thursday, July 10, at 7 pm against the DC Grays.
Blue Caps Take Down Senators-7/7/08
The Blue Caps knocked off the Vienna Senators this evening, 4-2. Coming into today, Vienna was the number one ranked college wood bat team in the country. This also marks the first time the Blue Caps have ever beaten the Senators. The game was highlighted by outstanding pitching, great defense, and timely hitting. Austin Booker (California) had two RBI and Shane Brown (Central Florida) belted his sixth home run to provide the Blue Caps' offense. Ryan Baione (Stevenson) also played an outstanding game at shortstop. The highlight of the game, though, was the Blue Caps' pitching. Taylor Land (St. Edward's) tossed 6.2 innings, allowing only one earned run, in picking up the win and Max Langford finished from there to lock down the save.
The Blue Caps return to action Wednesday, July 9, at 6 pm at Fairfax High School. First they will finish a game from earlier in the season and then play the evening's scheduled game against the Arlington Diamonds.
Blue Caps Fail to Hold Lead-7/3/08
The Blue Caps dropped their last game before the All-Star Break tonite to the McLean Raiders, 7-6. Starting pitcher Mike Sweeney (Gettysburg) went 7 innings, allowing just two earned runs as the Blue Caps took a 6-2 lead into the eighth inning. In the eighth, the Raiders capped a five-run rally with a grand slam to take a lead that they would hang onto. On the offensive side, Max Eckert (Stevenson) reached base five times and hit his eighth home run of the season. Derek Kline (Millersville) added his third home run and Matt Kaler (Massachusett's) reached base three times.
The Blue Caps are off until Monday night, July 7, when they travel to Water's Field to play the Vienna Senators at 7 pm. The All-Star Game will be held on Saturday night, July 5, at Water's Field, and the Blue Caps will be represented by Max Eckert (Stevenson), Chris Duffy (Central Florida), Shane Brown (Central Florida), and Jay Joines (Richmond).
Blue Caps Drop Both Ends-7/2/08
The Blue Caps fell in both games this evening. In the continuation of the June 23 curfew-shortened game, the Blue Caps fell in ten innings, 5-3. In the scheduled game, the Blue Caps fell behind early, battled back, but ended up coming short as the final score was 9-5. Mike Thatcher (Newberry) threw well in relief to give the Blue Caps a chance to come back.
The Blue Caps' final game before the All-Star Break will be tomorrow night, July 3, at Fairfax High School at 7 pm against the McLean Raiders.
Blue Caps Fall in Extra Innings-7/1/08
The Blue Caps lost a heartbreaker in 10 innings to the Vienna Senators this evening, 10-4. The Blue Caps scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings, but the Senators connected on a grand slam and a two-run homer to put the game away. Alex Eliopoulos (Johns Hopkins) started for the Blue Caps and threw well, keeping them in the game. On offense, Robert Hays (St. Edward's) hit his fifth home run in as many days and Max Eckert (Stevenson) chipped in three hits of his own.
The Blue Caps travel to Paul VI High School on Wednesday to play the Fairfax Nationals. They will first play the continuation of a curfew-shortened game at 6 pm followed by the actual game itself.
Blue Caps Take Down Grays-6/30/08
The Blue Caps surpassed last year's win total with a dominating 9-2 win over the DC Grays at Banneker Field this evening. Taylor Land (St. Edward's) tossed a complete game, allowing only six hits and one walk. On offense, Chris Duffy (Central Florida) had four hits and Chris Haney (Dallas Baptist) and Derek Kline (Millersville) each chipped in two hits.
The Blue Caps next game will be a home game against the first place Vienna Senators on Tuesday, July 1. The game is scheduled to start at 7 pm at Fairfax High School.
Blue Caps to Send Four to All-Star Game-6/30/08
This year's Clark Griffith League All-Star team has finally been announced. The Beltway Blue Caps will have four representatives on this year's team. The four representatives are Jay Joines (Richmond), Chris Duffy (Central Florida), Shane Brown (Central Florida), and Max Eckert (Stevenson).
Joines will be a junior next year and has a 3-1 record with an ERA of 1.50 so far this season. He tossed a one-hit shutout on June 21 against the Maryland Orioles.
Brown is also a rising junior who plays corner infield and catcher. He is currently hitting .389, has five home runs, and has driven in nineteen runs on the season.
Duffy is the third rising junior among the Blue Caps' All-Star representatives. He primarily plays in the outfield but is also capable of playing corner infield. He is currently hitting .289, has five home runs, is second in the league in RBI's with 23, and has also stolen five bases.
Eckert will be a senior next year. He is primarily a catcher but also sees time at the corner infield positions. He is currently tied for the league lead with seven home runs, is hitting .365, has driven in 21 runs and also is among the league leaders in on-base percentage.
Blue Caps' Bats Stay Hot-6/29/08
The Blue Caps' bats kept up their torrid pace today as the Blue Caps defeated the Maryland Orioles East 17-5 in a make-up game. Max Langford (Dartmouth) went the distance on the mound to earn his second win. The offense was highlighted by home runs off of the bats of Max Eckert (Stevenson), Robert Hays (St. Edward's), and Keon Broxton (Santa Fe). Austin Booker (California) helped set the table for the big guys by drawing three walks and banging out two doubles in his five plate appearances as well as scoring four runs.
Today's win also marked the Blue Caps' ninth win of the season. That matches the total that last year's team put up over the entire 44 game season.
The Blue Caps return to action Monday night against the DC Grays. The game will be played at 7 pm at Banneker Field in Washington, D.C.
Blue Caps Earn Split-6/28/08
The Blue Caps earned a split in their doubleheader today against the Putty Hill Panthers Blue. The Blue Caps took the first game, 15-2, on the power of a Danny White (Kenyon) complete game and home runs off of the bats of Derek Kline (Millersville) and Robert Hays (St. Edward's). In the second game, the Blue Caps came up short 7-4. Andrew Juba (Mary Washington) threw well in relief and Robert Hays chipped in his second home run of the doubleheader.
The Blue Caps end their homestand Sunday with a makeup game against the Maryland Orioles East at 1 pm on Sunday, June 29, at Fairfax High School.
Blue Caps Hold Off Grays-6/27/08
The Blue Caps defeated the DC Grays this evening, 13-9. The Blue Caps jumped out to an early 8-1 lead, and held off a late charge by the Grays to lock down the victory. The Blue Caps were led by the pitching of Jay Joines (Richmond), who won his third game of the year and tossed six innings while allowing one unearned run. The Blue Caps offense had an all-around strong day and was led by Mike Lenox (Bridgewater), who had three hits and three RBI, and Chris Duffy (Central Florida), who also had two RBI and scored three runs.
The Blue Caps return to action Saturday night with a twilight interleague doubleheader at Fairfax High School against the Putty Hill Panthers Blue. The first game is scheduled to start at 5 pm and the second game will start thirty minutes after the completion of the first game.
Blue Caps Drop Tight One-6/26/08
The Blue Caps fell to the DC Grays this evening, 11-10. In a seesaw battle, the Blue Caps fought back from an early 5-0 deficit, then surrendered leads of 9-5 and 10-9. The Blue Caps offense was led by home runs off of the bats of Chris Haney (Dallas Baptist) and Robert Hays (St. Edward's). Alex Eliopoulos (John's Hopkins) took the defeat, despite pitching well into the sixth inning.
The Blue Caps continue their home stand Friday night, June 27, with a rematch against the Grays at 7 pm at Fairfax High School.
Blue Caps Fall to Raiders-6/25/08
The Blue Caps dropped this evening's game to the McLean Raiders, 11-7. The Blue Caps' offense was led by Max Eckert (Stevenson), who hit his fifth and sixth home runs of the year, Shane Brown (Central Florida), who added his fifth home run, and Keon Broxton (Santa Fe), who hit his first home run of the summer.
The Blue Caps return to action Thursday, June 26, at 4 pm against the DC Grays. The game will be part of a split doubleheader at Fairfax High School.
Blue Caps Take Down Raiders-6/24/08
The Blue Caps defeated the McLean Raiders this evening, 10-5. Taylor Land (St. Edward's) tossed 7 strong innings in picking up his first win of the season. The offense was led by Chris Duffy (Central Florida), who had has league-leading 5th home run, Max Eckert (Stevenson), who reached base all four times he batted, and Ryan Baione (Stevenson), who hit his first home run of the year.
Monday night's game was suspended in the middle of the 7th inning with the Blue Caps and Nationals tied at 3. It will be completed the next time the teams meet.
The Blue Caps play again Wednesday night, June 25, again against the Raiders. Game time is at 7 pm at Fairfax High School.
Blue Caps Down Pirates-6/22/07
The Blue Caps defeated the Carney Pirates today, 8-3. In a very well played game that was close until the last inning, the Blue Caps finally put it all together. Danny White (Kenyon) tossed eight innings, allowing three runs, in picking up the win. On offense, Chris Duffy (Central Florida) contributed his fourth home run of the year. Shane Brown (Central Florida), Jose Ramos (Jackson St.), and Keon Braxton (Santa Fe) also had strong days at the plate for the Blue Caps. Defensively, Duffy threw out the tying run at the plate in the eighth with a perfect strike from leftfield to end the inning.
The Blue Caps return home on Monday, June 23 with a game against the Fairfax Nationals. Game time is at 8 pm and the game will be the second part of a doubleheader at Fairfax High School. The first game will feature the Arlington Diamonds and the McLean Raiders and begins at 5 pm.
Blue Caps Split DH-6/21/08
The Blue Caps earned a split in their doubleheader today, winning the first game 3-0 and falling in the second game 9-7. The first game was a classic pitchers' duel in which the Blue Caps came up on the right side. Jay Joines (Richmond) fired a complete game, one-hit, shutout, striking out nine batters in the process. In the second game, the Blue Caps fell behind early, and rallied again at the end to make it interesting. Chris Duffy (Central Florida) and Ryan Baione (Stevenson) each had three hits, Shane Brown (Central Florida) hit his fourth home run of the season, placing him a tie with Max Eckert (Stevenson) for the league lead.
The Blue Caps return to action on Sunday, June 22, for a make-up game with the Carney Pirates. Game time is 1 pm at Paul VI High School.
Blue Caps Fall in Shootout-6/20/08
The Blue Caps dropped a tight one this evening to the Senators, 13-12. In a marathon game that lasted well over three hours, the offense was on display. The Blue Caps' charge was led by Max Eckert (Stevenson), who had two grand slams on the evening. Chris Duffy (Central Florida) also added his third home run of the season to add to the offense.
Game Suspended-6/19/08
The Blue Caps' game this evening was suspended after six complete innings due to an umpire curfew. At the time, the Blue Caps were trailing the Arlington Diamonds, 9-5. The Blue Caps had jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but the combination of a few miscues in the field and some timely hitting by the Diamonds turned that around. This game will be completed at some point during the season.
The Blue Caps' next game is Friday night against the first-place Vienna Senators at Waters Field at 7 pm.
Blue Caps Drop Both Ends-6/18/08
The Blue Caps fell in both ends of their split doubleheader this evening. In the first game, the Senators won a hard-fought game 5-1. Darren McLean (GMU) tossed 5 2/3 outstanding innings to give the Blue Caps a chance to win, but the offense had difficulty stringing any hits together courtesy of some outstanding Senator pitching.
The Blue Caps lost the second game of the night to the Arlington Diamonds, 3-1. Taylor Land (St. Edward's) and Brendan DiBari (Virginia-Wesleyan) combined to hold the Diamonds down, and again the bats struggled. The Blue Caps did rally late and the game ended with the bases loaded.
The Blue Caps next game is Thursday night, June 19, at 7 pm at Fairfax High School against the Arlington Diamonds. Come out and catch a game.
Blue Caps to Host Split Doubleheader-6/17/08
Due to the large number of rainouts, the Blue Caps will play a split doubleheader on Wednesday, June 18, at Fairfax High School. The first game will be a make-up against the Vienna Senators and is tentatively scheduled to start at 4:30. The second game will be the regularly scheduled game for that evening against the Arlington Diamonds. Its start time will be pushed back to 8 pm. Come out and enjoy a long day of great baseball.
Blue Caps Rained Out Again-6/16/08
The Blue Caps had their third straight game rained out tonight against the Senator's. Make-up games have been tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, June 17 and Sunday June 22.
The next game currently on the Blue Caps schedule will be Wednesday night, June 18, at Fairfax High School against the Diamonds.
Blue Caps Lose One to O's, One to Rain-6/14/08
The Blue Caps dropped game one of their doubleheader today against the Maryland Orioles, 5-2, in a rain-shortened six inning game. The second game of the doubleheader was cancelled due to rain. Today was just one of those days when nothing seemed to fall in for the Blue Caps bats, as they only managed 5 hits against Orioles' pitcher Kieth Fritz. Jay Joines (Richmond) went the distance in the losing effort, allowing 3 earned runs.
The game that was scheduled for Sunday, June 15, has already been cancelled due to field conditions. The Blue Caps' next game will be Monday night, June 16, against the Arlington Senators. The game will be at Fairfax High School at 7 pm.
Blue Caps Win 11-6-6/12/08
The Blue Caps scored their first league win of the season Thursday night with an 11-6 win over the Arlington Diamonds at Fairfax High School. Pitcher Alex Eliopoulos (John's Hopkins) tossed 7 strong innings in recording his first win of the season. Derek Kline (Millersville) had a first inning grand slam and Chris Duffy (Central Florida) also contributed his second home run of the season. Sam Bender (UMBC), Max Eckert (Villa Julie), Robert Hays (St. Edward's), Shane Brown (Central Florida), and Austin Booker (California) also contributed multi-hit nights.
The Blue Caps' next game is Friday night, June 13, at Paul VI High School against the Fairfax Natioals. Game time is 7 pm.
Blue Caps Lose to Grays-6/11/08
The Blue Caps dropped their third straight game tonite to the DC Grays, 5-3. Darren McLean (George Mason) threw well despite picking up his second loss. Shane Brown (Central Florida) connected with a home run for the third straight game and Max Eckert (Villa Julie) added his second home run of the year.
The Blue Caps look to end their skid at 8 pm Thursday night at Fairfax High School against the Arlington Diamonds. The game will be the second part of a 4-team Clark Griffith League doubleheader. The first game of the doubleheader will feature the DC Grays playing the McLean Raiders at 5 pm.
Shane Brown Named Player of the Week-6/11/08
Shane Brown (Central Florida) was named the Clark Griffith Player of the Week for the week of June 4-June 10. Brown hit .421, scored 4 runs, drove in 7 runs, and hit two home runs in five games during that span.
Blue Caps Fall 10-6-6/9/08
The Blue Caps fell to the Nationals 10-6 on Monday night. In a hard fought game, the Blue Caps rallied from a 4-2 deficit to take a 6-4 lead into the ninth before falling. The come back was led by a home run off of the bat of Shane Brown (Central Florida) in the sixth and a three run 8th with clutch two out hits off of the bats of Max Eckert (Villa Julie) and Mike Lenox (Bridgewater).
The Blue Caps will be be back in action on Tuesday night at Paul VI High School against the Carney Pirates at 7 pm.
Blue Caps Come up Short in Slugfest-6/8/08
The Blue Caps lost to the Raiders 12-9 on Sunday night. The two teams combined for six home runs and 21 total hits. Shane Brown (Central Florida), Chris Duffy (Central Florida), and Max Eckert (Villa Julie) accounted for the Blue Caps' home runs, all of which came in a five run seventh inning that made brought the Blue Caps roaring back from a 12-4 deficit.
The Blue Caps continue their season with their first home game of the season against the Fairfax Nationals on Monday, June 9 at 7 pm.
Blue Caps Sweep Doubleheader-6/7/08
The Blue Caps swept their first interleague doubleheader of the summer, beating the Gaithersburg Giants by scores of 5-3 and 9-6. The day was highlighted by the pitching performances of Jay Joines (Richmond) and Max Langford (Dartmouth), who both earned their first wins of the season. The offense had an outstanding day that was led by Shane Brown (Central Florida), Derek Kline (Mercersburg), and Sam Bender (UMBC). The Blue Caps took the lead early in the first game and held on to win. In the second game, they rallied from a 6-1 deficit in the top of the seventh to tie the game and send it to extra innings. The Blue Caps then strung together 3 more runs in the top of the 8th and Langford closed it out in the bottom half of the eighth.
The Blue Caps' next game is a make-up game on Sunday, June 8, at 7 pm at Fairfax High School against the McLean Raiders.
Blue Caps Lose Opener-6/6/08
The Blue Caps lost their season opener tonite, 5-1, to the Vienna Senators. It was a well-played game that was dominated by pitching. The Blue Caps were led by starting pitcher Darren McLean (George Mason), who tossed six innings and notched eight strikeouts, and Chris Duffy (Central Florida), who was 2-4 at the plate and played solid defense at third base.
The Blue Caps travel to Gaithersburg Saturday for their first interleague doubleheader of the year with the Giants. Game time is one pm.
Blue Caps Postponed Again-6/5/08
The Blue Caps were postponed for the second time tonite due to electrical problems at Fairfax High School. The Blue Caps will now open their season Friday night at Waters Field against the Senators at 7 pm. A makeup game against McLean has been scheduled for Sunday, June 8 at 7 pm at Fairfax High School.
Blue Caps' Opener Postponed-6/4/08
The Blue Caps' season opener on Wednesday, June 4, has been postponed due to the severe weather in the D.C. area this evening. A make-up date has not yet been set.
The Blue Caps will now open their season at home at Fairfax High School on Thursday, June 5 at 7 pm against the DC Grays.
Blue Caps Open Season on June 4, Home Opener June 5-6/2/08
The Blue Caps season opener is Wednesday, June 4 at 7 pm against the McLean Raiders at Fairfax High School. The Raiders are the home team for the opener which was originally scheduled to be played at McLean High School.
The Blue Caps' home opener will be on Thursday, June 5 at 7 pm, as the Blue Caps officially open their home schedule with a game against the DC Grays. There will be no addmission fee at these games, please come out and support us and watch some great baseball.
The opening week is rounded out by a trip to Waters Field to face the Senators on Friday and an interleague doubleheader against the Gaithersburg Giants in Maryland on Saturday.
